Everybody wants skin like a baby’s. Regardless of age, sex or even cultural differences, it’s an underlying knowledge that flawless skin plays a tremendous role in looking radiant, healthy and beautiful. This may be a beauty article, but there’s something in it for the guys too. You don’t need to put on make up, have expensive lotions or spend hours at a beauty centre to look a million times better! Here are three super simple rules if you aren’t blessed with ever youthful genes.
Secret One – Skincare Routine
It’s no secret that your skincare routine goes hand in hand with the health of your skin. What most people don’t know is exactly how to execute your skincare routine to maximize benefits. Here’s Lolitalane’s suggestion on the perfect routine after extensive research and trail and error.
In this day and age, both men and women apply some sort of make up or other. For men that don’t know the beauty of subtle enhancements, this section is still completely relevant to you. The reason for double cleansing is that a simple facial wash doesn’t completely remove make up, dirt, grime and pollutants accumulated in a day.
The first step in cleansing is identifying a cleanser that is suitable for your skin type. Cream cleansers are perfect for people with dry or dry/combination skin and gel or water based cleansers works miracles for oily or oily/combination skin. Claris likes The Body Shop’s Vitamin E Cream Cleanser and Emily loves ZA’s Cleansemax. So now you know our skin types.
The second step is to completely removes residues of make up, dirt, grime and pollutants that were previously broken down by your cleanser. Choosing a facial foam that targets a benefit you prefer can come in at this point. We’re both fans of Laneige’s Pore Deep Clearing Foam!
How you treat your skin
Another highly overlooked factor is how you apply products onto your skin. Too much pressure or pulling your skin can cause premature wrinkles and saggy skin. This starts from the first step of cleansing your face to applying your moisturizer.
Always lightly use your fingertips to massage in circular motions in an outward direction when washing, scrubbing or applying serums and moisturizers. The only difference is when applying eye creams. Using your weakest finger, the ring finger, lightly tap your eye cream under and around your eye. These methods also allows your skin to correctly absorb products and prevent wastage by over spreading or worst, having more product on your hands than your face. One last tip on being kind to your skin, try to keep your hands off your face as much as possible and never rub your face roughly.
Don’t be lazy
This is the most commen mistake people make. No matter how busy, tired or wasted you are, never forget skincare. It’s when you are busy, tired or drunk that your skin runs amok.
You don’t necessarily need to go through a 5 step plan but the least you can do is remove your eye make up and give your face a quick wash. Biore’s new facial wipes is a simple and fast solution we both love. Here’s a few tips from us when you are desperately lazy.
Don’t get that drunk in the first place and in times of extreme exhaustion, 1) Use a good facial wipe. 2) Slap on a sheet mask. 3) Go to bed. It’s that simple! Of course, don’t forget to resume your normal routine the following day.
Secret Two – Watch what you put in yourself
There’s a saying, ‘You are what you eat’. That’s not to say that if you eat oily food you get oily skin, it’s too literal a context. What it does mean, however, is that if you eat unhealthy, you will be unhealthy. Research shows that your skin is one of the first organ that exhibits poor health. So if you’re breaking out when you normally don’t or if your skin has been dull and sallow, it’s a sign that something isn’t quite right.
Everyone knows about having lots of fruits and vegetables, less saturated fat, less sodium and lean meats and fish. You don’t need to be a rocket scientist to know what the right proportions are nor if what you’re eating is unhealthy either. What you do need to know is that other than regular food, there are plenty of ways to boost the health of your skin. We love a few products that are beneficial to both men and women that many people might not realize.
Be it in a pill form or a concentrated sachet drink form, collagen helps to maintain your skin’s youthful elasticity. We currently love powder sachets that can be mixed into any drink since they are normally flavored quite deliciously. Capsules are extremely convenient if you have a busy lifestyle though, one less reason to be lazy! As with any oral supplement, you have to monitor your reaction to the product as some people may be allergic to ingredients used.
We love antioxidants for their ability to combat free radicals and skin repairing effects so we are naturally fixated on cranberry juice and produce that are packed with it. Even though there are many natural produce and supplements that are packed with antioxidants, it’s hard to find a power source for the substance. So we’ll let you guys in on one secret. Oligomeric Proanthocyanidins. A very long scientific ‘smart’ word, but it’s one of the most powerful antioxidants known and is a super antioxidant. 20x more powerful than Vitamin C and 50x that of Vitamin E, and we found a supplement with it. Omega 3 Capsules
People generally take omega 3 for joints and general health, BUT, Omega 3 helps our skin too. The amazing ‘fat’ helps in keeping our skin supple and retain it’s moisture levels. Claris and I are both quite squeamish about fish so we are excited that there are fish oils that are now odorless. We haven’t gotten our hands on those yet but we love regular Omega 3 capsules. Note: As with any supplements you take, always use in moderation!
Secret Three – Take care of your body
The last and least observed rule for perfect skin. Taking care of your body. Other than sleeping early and drinking plenty of water, there is one other way to ensure your body is in tip top shape and kept at optimal functioning status. Exercise. Now, don’t close this window! We know that exercising is boring for most people, that’s why there are so many excuses for not working out. However, we aren’t asking you guys to be gym rats nor to achieve a super model’s figure. We are saying keep healthy, if you want to have glowing radiant skin, that is. Here’s what we suggest.
The one thing you can’t avoid, is cardiovascular work outs. It keeps your heart and lungs pumping, increases your heart rate and helps your body burn off excess fats and stored energy. There is a whole plethora of cardio work outs but they generally utilize the large muscles. Like the legs. What we suggest? 30 mins of your choice of cardio, 3 times a week. As an incentive, think about how good you’d look and who you just might meet at the gym/pool/studio.
Or any other form of meditative exercise that forces you to calm down and relax yourself completely. In our day and age, we are generally very wound up people. We are stressed every single minute of the day and night, even when we are sleeping. Our minds are constantly at battle and that amount of stress produces bad chemicals that affect our bodies. However, when we work out or relax ourselves, our body produces feel good endorphins that combats stress and revitalizes your body. What we suggest? 1 hour sessions, twice a week. Also, since yoga is a good way to tone up, strengthen your core muscles, improve your concentration and flexibility, imagine what you can do with that.
How long has it been since any of you just let loose and danced? Not as a medium of seduction or artistic prowess but just moving to music? It doesn’t matter if you’re doing it in the privacy of your bedroom, with a couple of friends on a night out about town or taking up a lesson. Dancing makes you aware of your body and utilizes muscles you don’t normally use in daily life or planned work outs. It releases endorphins that makes you feel good while actually having fun. What we suggest? Intermittent bursts that accumulates to one hour, twice a week. Obviously, don’t drink like a mad man or woman, if possible, be the designated driver. Also, no greasy supper after, head straight to bed and you will definitely see the results of your hard work.
If you haven’t realized it, you’ve got 1 week’s worth of exercise right there. You wouldn’t even have realized that you have chalked up 5 1/2 hrs of exercise because you were busy meeting new people, feeling relaxed, happy or just having fun. You know what the best part is? You might realize how much better you feel and look, that you explore other aspects of exercises.
So that’s what we’ve got to share on achieving beautiful skin. You can’t bank on beauty products nor hardcore diets, balance is key for everything you do in life. Do give the tips a try.
